COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN OF RAIL WAY TRACK

Introduction:
Despite many years of operating experience the design of railway track is a semi-empirical exercise based largely on the engineering experience of the designer. This is due mainly to a lack of understanding of the various components which constitute a railway track system and, therefore, make the formulation of a rational design method virtually impossible.
The Bureau of Transport Economics in conjunction with B.H.P. Melbourne Research Laboratories have recently undertaken a survey of the numerous methods available to the designer, and organized them as a suite of computer programs with which the designer can quickly and easily evaluate a design using a number of different approaches and design criteria (Bureau of Transport Economics, 1980).
This paper will outline the steps taken in a traditional railway track design problem and apply the methodology to the design of a section of typical sugar industry track.
