Abstract:
The design of high-speed railway track in Europe still follows at the present time the same
criteria used on the design of the first high-speed lines built 20 years ago, adopting mostly a
ballasted track configuration.
This track configuration presents the advantage of having a delimited cost and high reliability,
since it allows correcting track defects with a simple procedure such as track leveling and
tamping. However, this system has also some limitations when the speeds are increased
mostly due to the rapid growth of ballast vibration level.
In this context , this paper synthesizes the results of a railway research project carried out by
CENIT concerning the technical and economical viability of using a bituminous sub-ballast in
high-speed tracks.
